DEBATE IN LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY

In the state Assembly during session time, members questions the government and draw it's attention to significant issues. A group of students got an opportunity to attend one of the sessions of the state Assembly. The state Assembly building was an imposing structure with a beautifully planned landscape. After a thorough security check, they were seated in a gallery. Form there they could watch the working of the Assembly.

MLA 1:

In my constituency of shahpur, in last         two weeks, there are reports of four
Deaths due to dengue and more than 15
Are affected. It is a shame that the
Government has made tall claims in
The past that the situation is under
Control and all measures to prevent its
Outbreak has been taken. On top of it,
     Poor drainage system and stagnant
Rainwater has made life of residents
Miserable. I would like to bring to
Attention of Health Minister that any
Further delay in action might turn it
     Into an epidemic.

MLA 2:

My constituency of koteshwar is also facing an outbreak of malaria; shortage of both staff and facilities in the government hospitals have aggravate the problem. People who come to government hospitals cannot afford treatment in private hospitals. So, how does the government plan to deal with this situation? We are waiting for the government to take serious note of the situation.

MLA 3 :

We have voiced our unhappiness on the issue of shortage of medical staff and poor facilities and neglect on part of hospitals in the past too but government has not yet Taken any concrete steps. The condition of Primary Health Centres is worse. Doctors go on leave and there are no substitutes, many doctors do not want to work in rural areas. People in rural areas have to walk miles to get medical attention. It is the moral duty of the government to ensure that it provides health care facilities to all its citizens. What is the government's plan of action in this regard?

MLA 4:

I think the opposition is over-reacting on this issue. Vacancies are being filled up, and proposals to modernise the government hospitals are already through. Moreover, we are trying to provide mobile health care facilities in every village of the state. To tackle the sanitation issue, we have started cleanliness drives with the help of local bodies.

MLA 5 :

Dholpur village in my constituency is facing a severe water crisis and the area is turning into a desert. Even after repeated requests to make alternative arrangements, local officials are not paying any heed. Many people walk several kilometres to get clean drinking water. I want to bring to attention of the Minister the fact that providing clean drinking water is the government's responsibility. Has the government made any effort to lay new water pipelines or clean up the wells? Why is the government not pulling up corrupt and inefficient officials in the local bodies?

MLA 6 :

Honourable speaker, I think my colleague has blown the issue out of proportion. Work to channelise water into this area has already started. People have to endure this hardship for only a few months. In fact, for the convenience of the locals, hand pumps are being installed.
